LÆSEMASKINER: udfoldning af bøger og arkiver
READING MACHINES: unfolding books and archives
Kunsthal Aarhus 22. juni – 8. september 2013
– fernisering 21. juni kl. 18:00

Endelig lanceres udgivelsesserien After Hand Archive med titlerne The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog af Henrik Have og Situationistisk Revolution 1–3 redigeret af Situationistisk Internationales danske fraktion (J.V. Martin), der tilsvarende indgår i udstillingen.

READING MACHINES: unfolding books and archives
During summer 2013 the independent publisher Edition After Hand will be working with a bookstore and exhibition under the title Reading Machines - unfolding books and archives. The Publisher hereby initiates a multiannual cooperation with the exhibition space on publications, research, exhibits and bookstore. The basis the project is a series of switching actions between the exhibition and book room, and a gradual unfolding of possible passages between contemporary art and contemporary poetry, which among other things can reflect and discuss linguistic and technological operations and their aesthetic effects. Reading Machines presents works by Henrik Have and Jan Bäcklund, publications from the Swedish publisher/journal OEI, and unfolds books by Cecilia Grönberg and Jonas (J) Magnusson.

In their book Omkopplingar [Reconnections] Cecilia Grönberg and Jonas (J) Magnusson resembles the Yellow Pages in its graphic design and format, the 1056-page tome forms an archive and a topography for conceptual operations and digressions, tapping into the 20th and 21th century documentary and documentarist discussions in literature and photography.Omkopplingar is an exploration of a poetics of transcription, of transfer, relocation, recontextualisation, and of the aesthetic – and working – space. Grönberg and Magnusson are both a part of OEI which is presented in the new bookstore in Kunsthal Aarhus.

HENRIK HAVE

Henrik Have has since the late 60s worked consistently with the book as object, installation, matrix and machine. In 1973 he established the publisher Edition After Hand, as an artist-run situation, working with books and objects. Before that Have had used the term After hand as title and concept in a number of book projects which can best be described as situationist book environments and action novels. Objects and installations made from bags, suitcases and boxes that form cartographies and scores with linguistic structures and concepts most often dealing with image policy, anti-psychiatry, critique of system and capitalism.

AFTER HAND ARCHIVE / / / READING ROOM

After Hand has existed as publishers since 1973. The editorial position is associated with artistic practice; that of Henrik Have’s. The publisher’s program is grounded in an independent production, with the hand and the media as epistemology, to reduce the distance between thought and physical object. The series After Hand Archive republishes and renegotiates manifest publications, which in its time was of radical nature and concerned the upcoming art. The publications will serve as material for artistic research and as scores to look at the future through history; including Kunsthal Aarhus’ research project on the book/exhibition århus rapport 1961-1969.

Jan Bäcklund works with the relationship between concept (text, image, idea) and substance (book, work, all sorts of things), and the dissolution of the relationship between thought (concept) and physical object (substance). The focal point is the collection and the metaphysical drama of the archive as it unfolds between idea and object, which has to do with memory, portability and reproducibility. Through complex combinations of exact quotation of the bibliography, archive categorization and the memory of the reading machine a model is produced for the less fortunate collector.
